Our Process

Working with Soil & Story is designed to feel easy - even if your yard situation feels anything but. Here's exactly what to expect from start to finish.

  • Every project starts with The Conversation - a 90-minute discovery session where we get into the details of your space, your goals, and what's actually driving you to make a change. Book directly online, and you'll receive a short intake form to complete before we meet - so we can hit the ground running. We'll also ask you to share photos of your space and any inspiration you've collected - Pinterest boards, screenshots, even rough sketches on a napkin are all welcome. No jargon or judgment, and no pressure to know what you want yet.

  • After our call, we dig into your site - analyzing sun patterns, soil conditions, water flow, existing plants, and the unique quirks of your property’s microclimate. For most projects this happens remotely using satellite imagery, your photos, and our knowledge of the local landscape. For larger or more complex projects, we'll schedule an in-person site visit.

    This is where the nerdy part happens - and honestly, it's our favorite part.

  • We build your custom landscape design - rooted in permaculture principles, specific to your soil and climate, and tailored to how you actually want to use your space. Every design is phased so you can implement it all at once or tackle it gradually over time.

    Depending on your package, your deliverables will include zone maps, plant lists, 2D site plans, phased implementation guides, and seasonal care notes.

    Blueprint: 2-3 weeks · Full Story: 4-6 weeks

  • We deliver your completed design with a walkthrough call so nothing gets lost in translation. From there, you're in the driver's seat - hand the plans to a contractor, tackle it yourself in phases, or ask us about trusted local installers. Your yard, your pace, your story.

    Follow-up support calls are included in every package. We're not the kind of designers who hand you a PDF and disappear.
